Dear Friend of Habonim,
We hope you enjoyed a much well-deserved rest this summer. Here at Habonim we are busily planning for the High Holidays beginning on September 29th and culminating ten days later with the observance of Yom Kippur. It is during this time that we reflect back on our past deeds, both individually and as a community. We petition God for forgiveness so that we can enter the new year with a clean slate and focus on mending our shortcomings through Teshuvah (repentance), Tefilah (prayer), and Tzedakah (charity).
On Yom Kippur, the Yizkor memorial service offers those who have lost loved ones an opportunity to recall the good deeds that exemplified their lives to keep them alive in our hearts and inspire us to improve our own behavior. Our tradition teaches that by giving tzedakah in their memory, we elevate the souls of the departed and atone for our misdeeds with this act of loving-kindness.
At this time, we ask you to contribute to the High Holiday appeal to honor this tradition, as well as to help ensure the continuity of our vibrant Jewish community. Your contributions will allow Habonim to continue serving as the spiritual home of our members and educating our children and families in a spiritually nourishing haven, all of which requires necessary funds beyond dues and tuition.
This is a very special year for our congregation. It’s the 80th anniversary of Habonim’s founding, which we will celebrate throughout the year, but particularly on two occasions: On November 8th at our Friday night service as we commemorate the 81st anniversary of Kristallnacht, and on Thursday, February 6th, at our annual Gala as we pay tribute to members of our wonderful community. The 80th anniversary will also be recognized and honored by our schools and in other adult education and community programs.
Habonim has much to be thankful for in the year that’s ending and much to look forward to in 5780. Please help us continue to enrich the lives of our members by committing generously to the High Holiday appeal. To honor Habonim’s 80th anniversary, and to help plant the seeds that will sustain us for another 80 years, we have created a new donor group, for members and families giving or pledging $8,000 between now and December 31, 2019. Donors in the group will receive two tickets to the Gala, the Nursery School fundraiser, the Passover Seder, Purim party, Chanukah party and all Shabbat dinners. Every contribution is meaningful and appreciated, but we hope you will consider making this 80th anniversary contribution level part of your annual giving plan.
On behalf of the entire Board, I wish you a happy, healthy, and spiritually uplifting holiday. We look forward to joining you and your families in prayer as we find meaning, comfort and community during this special season.
