John Maxwell 101 Leadership is the final webinar of four courses for persons who want to deepen their understanding and response to God's call to ministry as a layperson, build skills, and relationships building, network, and equip leaders to minister in our churches and communities. Each of these courses is 3 hours in length.
Laity Leadership Institution is an opportunity to provide guidance, direction, and motivation in leading Laity in a new and exciting way. Move Laity outside the walls of the Church and into the community. One way to accomplish this is a transformative mindset and framework, which includes these four 3-hour live online courses—embracing efforts to help people grow spiritually through such workshops. As a Servant Lay Leader, these four courses have been created for personal vision and new ways to help your grow in your faith journey and unique skill sets in order to improve and strengthen your church’s ministries and beyond.

John Maxwell 101 Leadership—Speaker Bio
Yvette Kim Richards was born in Burlington, North Carolina, to her parents, the late Ret. CW4 David F. Richards, Jr., and the late Swannie M. Richards of Savannah, GA. As part of a military family, Richards traveled the world as a young child, living in Alaska, Massachusetts, Mannheim, Germany, North Carolina, and Georgia. After graduating college in North Carolina, she eventually settled in Missouri. Richards entered the corporate world and was employed for close to 28 years in the insurance industry, serving the majority of her career with State Farm Insurance Companies as a Claims Adjuster. During that time, she chaired and coordinated the State Farm Bayou Classic KaBOOM! Playground for New Orleans, LA, after Hurricane Katrina, and served as the media spokesperson for Bayou Classic on TV and Radio, planning and executing pregame and postgame activities.
During that time, Richards served as the National President of the United Methodist
Women Organization (2012-2016) and General Board of Global Ministries (2011-2016). She also chaired the United Methodist Women Legacy Fund and Special Property Committee. Other current roles include a member of the Missouri Mission Council and World Methodist Council; World Methodist Council Nomination Committee Chair and Evangelism Committee Secretary (2016-2021); BMCR National Board Member and Chair of the Advocacy Committee (2016- Present); South Central Jurisdiction BMCR Coordinator (2019- Present); Flourish Furnishing Ministry Board of Directors, Community Development (2019- Present); and C.M. Merritt Foundation Board of Directors (2017-Present). Director of Lay Servant Ministry for the Heartland District and Northwest District.
Additionally, Richards has served in several leadership roles within United Methodist
Women: District Representative; Missouri West Conference Membership Chair;
Nominating Committee; Dean Team; Dean of Missouri Co-Op School of Christian
Mission; and as the West Gulf, Pacific, and South Atlantic Regional School Youth
Study Leader.
Richards has also spoken at various retreats, annual meetings, and women's day
events. She served as Youth Workshop Leader at The National Gathering 2000, the
Alaska Annual Conference 2006, and Urban Ministries workshop training events.
Richards led mentoring workshops at The National Gathering in 2000 and the South
Central Jurisdiction Meeting in 2004, 2008, and 2012. Richards was also a Teen and
College/University Women Consultative Group member from 2000-to 2008 and a
workshop presenter at Leadership Development Days and Spiritual Growth Retreats.
Richards served as a Women's Division Director from 2008-2012; was a Board Member for the General Commission on Status and Role of Women from 2008-2012; and Global AIDS Fund Board Member from 2011-2012; Delegate Representative at World Council of Churches in 2013; and South Central Jurisdictional Delegate and 1st Alternate to General Conference in 2016. Richards is a John Maxwell Team Member, certified in coaching, leadership, training, and speaking, and is self-employed as a consultant in coaching, training, speaking, and leadership development.
Richards currently serves as Director of Community Connections and Missions for St. James United Methodist Church, based in Kansas City, Mo. Also an active member of the fellowship, Richards serves in the Hospitality Ministry and Membership Committee, Local UMW Unit, Difference Makers UMW Circle (Metro Unit), and oversees holiday food giveaway volunteer coordination. In addition, Richards served on the Missouri Conference Value Team, was a Brownie Leader for ten years with the Kansas City Girl Scouts of America, led the Take our Daughters to Work Luncheon, and was a Gold Award with Silver Assistant. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from North Carolina A&T State University (1985), a Master of Science in Leadership Develop from Walden University (2013), a Master of Science in Christian Ministry from United Theological Seminary (2019), and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary (2022). She has been an active member for over 33 years in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
