History of the Sacks Award

Each year since 1977, the Men’s Club Board of Directors has established a committee to recommend deserving individuals to receive the Samuel Sacks Achievement Award. Samuel Sacks, a dedicated and devoted member of the congregation and of the Men’s Club, established a fund over 45 years ago whereby the temple receives a yearly contribution. Mr. Sacks also wished to recognize members of the congregation for their service and support of the temple.

About Our 2024 Recipient: Nicole Frankel

Following a 20-year career in Fashion, Nicole Frankel has devoted herself to causes close to her heart. While her daughter Samantha was at The Calhoun School, Nicole was active in the Parents Association and Benefit, eventually chairing the annual fundraising event.

At Temple Emanu-El, Nicole began her involvement on the Visioning Committee and joined the Membership Committee soon after. She served on the Cantor search committee, which brought Cantor Glazman to our synagogue. Nicole was asked to serve on the Board of Trustees and eventually chair the Membership Committee. In partnership with Rabbi Gross-Prinz and now Rabbi Sapadin, Nicole created Gather, Temple Emanu-El’s small groups program. The Well, a women’s intergenerational study group, is another project Nicole has championed working alongside Cantor Anderson. In addition, Nicole currently serves on the Executive Board and the Nominating Committee. Previously she was on the 5th & 65th Committee, volunteered at Sunday Lunch, Project Prom, Thanksgiving and as a Shabbat Greeter. Nicole has enjoyed a close relationship with both clergy and staff; she recognizes how essential these partnerships are to continue growing our community and engagement.

Nicole is married to Steve, a recently retired partner at corporate PR firm Joele Frank and a UGA alum (Go Dawgs!). Their daughter Samantha is a recent graduate of The American University. Nicole grew up in New Jersey, graduating from Newark Academy and Ithaca College. She spent much of her life at another Temple Emanu-El (Westfield, NJ). The Frankels are also active members of The Jewish Center of the Hamptons.

Much of Nicole’s involvement in synagogue life has been shaped by her parents, Fred (of blessed memory) and Adele Shafman. They believed you support your local temple so it will be there to support you. Her love of Judaism stems from her summers at URJ Camp Harlam and her lifelong friendships she made both there and at religious school. In her spare time, Nicole likes to read, bake, exercise, travel and spend time with family and friends.
