As the holiday season approaches—a time often filled with activity, emotion, and expectation—we are invited to pause and return to the heart of our practice: mindfulness and awakening to presence. This daylong retreat offers an opportunity to slow down, reconnect inwardly, and renew the spirit through the simple yet profound practice of awareness.
Our focus for the day will be on vedana, or feeling tone—the subtle texture of pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral experience that accompanies every moment of consciousness. The Buddha described mindfulness of feeling tone as a doorway to freedom, a way to meet each moment without grasping or resistance. Through this practice, we discover that we do not need to be “fixed” or improved by meditation; we are already whole. By welcoming each moment as it is, we begin to rest in a deeper peace that is not dependent on circumstances.
Together, we will explore how to distinguish between worldly feelings—those shaped by desire, aversion, and ignorance—and unworldly feelings, which arise through the cultivation of renunciation, generosity, mindfulness, and lovingkindness. The calm and spacious joy of a heart free from craving is its own gift—a happiness that does not lead to suffering, a wholeness that embraces all of life.
The retreat will include periods of guided and silent sitting and walking meditation, a Dharma talk, and time for questions and reflection. Supported by community, both in person and online, we will cultivate a field of mindfulness and kindness that nourishes peace within ourselves and radiates outward into our world.
All are welcome. Some meditation experience is helpful but not required.
