Samadhi is a Pali word that is most often translated as concentration or absorption, and it represents the final category of the Eightfold Path. In Buddhist teachings, the development of concentration is seen as a key element in the wider path to wisdom and freedom. The more settled the mind is, the easier it is to investigate the nature of reality.
But how do we bring our minds to a steady, concentrated state without striving too hard in the process? Here lies the art of practice, of setting clear intentions but also letting go of expectation and "doing."
In this daylong retreat, Alexa will introduce us to practice with two different approaches to samadhi: breath and metta. Participants can expect a creative approach to the cultivation of samadhi to deepen insight.
Alexa Redner has been practicing in the Insight meditation tradition for twenty years, including over a year spent in intensive retreat practice. She was authorized to teach the Buddha’s Dharma by one of Spirit Rock’s founding teachers, James Baraz.
