Hurricane Dorian made landfall as a Category 5 storm in the northwestern portion of the Bahamas on Sept. 1, bringing with it 185 mph winds and storm surge of up to 23 feet. The storm stalled there for over 40 hours, causing massive destruction. So far, the storm is responsible for at least 30 deaths.
As the storm moved northward, it was initially downgraded to a Category 2 but again strengthened to a Category 3 as it battered the Carolinas with harsh rain, storm surge and winds reaching 115 mph. Several tornadoes have also touched down in the Carolinas, where watches are in effect.
