September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
86% of Friends of Karen children currently are facing cancer. We all know that cancer does not discriminate based on race, financial status, or age. There isn’t always an answer why some children get cancer. What we do know is that every child and family needs to be supported, emotionally, financially or having an advocate at this traumatic time. Friends of Karen is there to ensure that no family has to make this difficult journey with illness alone. Your support ensures that we can do this.
Fifteen-year-old Alexa was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that starts in the bone. The diagnosis turned this family’s world upside down and that’s when our social worker Rhonda, stepped in…to help turn things right. Friends of Karen is helping assist this family with the much-needed financial support by paying for many months of rent, utilities and food. Alexa’s brother, Nicholas, receives support from a Friends of Karen expressive arts therapist to help him understand the dynamic changes in the family due to his sister Alexa’s illness.
“We thank you for all the help you have given us. We pray that you continue helping families like us.” -Alexa
